In April 2023, the Easter holidays bring significant changes for employees awaiting days off from work. In Poland, days off during the Easter period are legally regulated, and the schedule for 2023 is as follows:
Maundy Thursday – April 6, 2023
Good Friday – April 7, 2023
Holy Saturday – April 8, 2023
Easter Sunday – April 9, 2023
Easter Monday – April 10, 2023
Easter Monday (April 10) is the only day legally designated as a day off from work. Sundays and Saturdays are days off from work, but this depends on agreements and arrangements at the workplace. Maundy Thursday (April 6) and Good Friday (April 7) are not legally recognized days off from work.
In practice, many workplaces choose to grant employees time off from work on Good Friday or Holy Saturday, often with the right to 100% compensation, or allow for an earlier end of the workday. These decisions are subject to internal agreements, regulations, or directives applicable in a given workplace.
For people professing faiths other than Catholicism, it is possible to obtain time off from work to observe their holidays. To do this, the employee should submit a request for leave at least 7 days before the day off. The employer is obliged to grant the leave, provided that the employee makes up for the time off, without the right to additional compensation for work on legally designated days off or overtime.
Easter Monday (April 10, 2023) as a legally designated day off from work applies to all employees, regardless of their religion, worldview, nationality, or citizenship, employed under Polish law. Therefore, even if an individual professes a faith other than Catholicism and does not celebrate Easter according to their religion, April 10, 2023, will be a day off from work for all employees.
In summary, in Poland in 2023, employees can count on a day off from work on Easter Monday.
